2004 Contest Winners

The 2004 Chester Himes High School Mystery Writing Contest received 66 entries. The stories ranged from deadly steamy passion to hard nosed P.I. investigations. 

Students from six different Oakland high schools participated in the writing contest.

  • Castlemont
  • Far West
  • McClymonds
  • Oakland Technical
  • School of Social Justice and Community Development
  • Skyline

Deanna Grant, 11th Grade, from Far West High School won the first place cash prize of $200, for her story, The Unwanted Truth

Jennifer Carroll, a 10th grade student from McClymonds High School was the second place winner. 

The other winners were:

  • Mei Zhou, 11th Grade, Skyline High School
  • Edwin Peabody 9th Grade, Oakland Technical High School

Runners-up were:

  • Deidra Miller 11th Grade, Castlemont
  • Joya Rodgers, 10th Grade, McClymonds
  • Nhi Hua, 10th Grade, Oakland Technical High School
